For nearly everyone, the Covid shutdown has diminished social connections and, at the same time,
increased overall stress levels. For many people, spending time outdoors has become an invaluable tool
during these difficult times.
Connecting with nature in almost any form— from planting a container garden to birdwatching – has multiple physical and mental benefits. Even before the pandemic, the quantifiable benefits of connecting to nature were emerging. This webinar will expand the concept of ‘connecting with nature’ to include forging bonds with animals. In fact, research shows that spending time with animals lowers blood pressure and levels of cortisol, the stress related hormone. Over the last decade, research funded by the National Institute of Health has shown that animals have measurable benefits in a variety of health treatments plans—from grief therapy, to glucose monitoring programs for Type 1 diabetics and
others.
This presentation will explore several unique programs which tap the power of forging bonds with animals,
focusing on the benefits of this work during this world-wide pandemic. Our speakers will include:
Hollyn Walters of the U.S. Forest Service will discuss her experience volunteering with Survivor’s
Best Friend, a non-profit, which unites shelter animals with survivors of sexual assault and
domestic violence.
Milton Byers, Wild Indigo Nature Explorations Coordinator at Audubon Great Lakes will discuss
how bird and nature walks are playing a healing role in the urban communities served throughout
the Great Lakes Region.
Luis Morales a Marine Biologist, Founder and Director of Birding San Pancho where he leads
birdwatching tours in the coast of Jalisco and Nayarit. Luis will discuss his experiences of using
birding as a form of wellness through bird therapy.
Lya Battle is the founder of Land of the Strays, a non-profit in Costa Rica which rescues and
shelters stray dogs, and engages local students in animal care while they develop transferable job
skills.
