CONCIENCIARTE : COMMUNITY CONSERVATION OF THREATHENED BIRD SPECIES INTEGRATING ARTS, SCIENCE AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION. |
¿QUÉ ES CONCIENCIARTE?Con-ciencia-arte (Arte + Ciencia = Conciencia) es nuestro programa de arte comunitario en el cual integramos tanto al arte, la ciencia y la educación ambiental como herramientas para impulsar la conservación de especies de aves amenazadas o en peligro de extinción.

WHAT IS "CONCIENCIARTE"?Concienciarte (Art + Science = Awareness) is our community education program in which we integrate arts, science and environmental education as our toolkit to advance the conservation and protection of endangered bird species.

En México existen 22 especies de loros y guacamayas de las cuales 21 están sujetos a protección especial por la NOM 059-2010 debido a que sus poblaciones han sido afectadas históricamente por el tráfico ilegal para utilizarlas como mascotas así como a causa de la pérdida de su hábitat. En la región de Bahía de Banderas tenemos
Además de los loros y guacamayas existen otras especies de aves tanto residentes y migratorias que también están amenazadas así que decidimos tomar acciones para impulsar su conservación desde el interior de las comunidades para ayudar a su conservación y protección a través de la integración del arte, la ciencia y la educación comunitaria en un solo programa. A través de nuestro proyecto Concienciarte que durante 2017-2018 tuvo el apoyo del programa de mini-becas del Laboratorio de Ornitología de Cornell así como de Defenders of Wildlife, Environment for the Americas, Conectores del Océano así muchos otros colaboradores y voluntarios que participaron y contribuyeron para hacer posible este proyecto. Realizamos dos talleres de arte en el Centro Comunitario Entreamigos en la localidad de San Francisco, Bahía de Banderas. Nayarit, México (mejor conocido internacionalmente como "San Pancho") durante dos distintas estaciones del año y tratando de alcanzar a una audencia diversa, gente de todas las edades, tanto locales como residentes y visitantes, principiantes y expertos... En el primer taller en verano de 2017 trabajamos con quince niños de 9 a 11 años con el tema de pericos y guacamayas mismas que tuvimos la oportunidad de observar en libertad mientras hacíamos arte. Cada niño creo dos piezas de arte, una la "adoptaron" ellos y otra la donaron para apoyar los programas de conservación del OASP: Los niños donaron sus hermosas creaciones con algo de nostalgia pero con absoluta convicción de contribuir a un mejor futuro para estas especies en nuestra comunidad y en la región. Cada una de las obras de arte fue enmarcada y se le incluyó un "Certificado de Adopción Sustentable" que indica que al adoptar esta ave en una forma de arte (la cual puede vivir más tiempo que un ave) estás apoyando la conservación de las aves. Un taller similar se realizó en el mismo espacio la primavera de 2018 principalmente adultos residentes "migratorios" internacionales y personas locales con el tema abierto de crear piezas de arte inspiradas en especies de aves amenazadas presentes en San Pancho. El resultado de ambos talleres integra un total de 30 piezas de arte algunas de las cuales ya han sido "adoptadas" ayudándonos a continuar realizando nuestros programas educativos y programas comunitarios. |
In Mexico there are 22 species of parrots and macaws, of which 21 have special protection by NOM 059-2010 because their populations have been historically affected by illegal trafficking to use them as pets as well as the loss of their habitat.
Besides to the parrot family there are other threatened of birds, including both resident and migratory species, so we decided to take actions to promote conservation from within the communities and facilitate conservation action by integrating arts, science and community education in one program. Through our Concienciarte project that during 2017-2018 had the support of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology´s mini-grant program as well as Defenders of Wildlife, Environment for the Americas, Ocean Connectors as well as many other collaborators and volunteers who participated in this project. We carried out two art workshops in the Entreamigos Community Center in the town of San Francisco, Bahía de Banderas. Nayarit, Mexico (better known internationally as "San Pancho") during two different seasons of the year and and trying to reach diverse audience: people of all ages, locals and visitors, amateurs and experts... In the first workshop in the summer of 2017 we created paintings with acrylic on paper with fifteen children from 9 to 11 years old with the theme of resident parrots and macaws whom we had the opportunity to observe in freedom while doing art. Each child created two pieces of art, one they "adopted" and the other was kindly donated to support SPBO´s educational program "Get to Know your Neighborhood birds"": The children donated their beautiful creations with something of nostalgia but with absolute certainty of contributing to a better future for these species in our community and region. Each of the art pieces was framed and included a "Certificate of Sustainable Adoption" that indicates that by adopting this bird in an art form (which can live longer than a bird) you are actually supporting bird conservation. A similar workshop was held in the same space in the spring of 2018 with international residents and local people with the open theme of creating pieces of art inspired by endangered bird species present in the area. The result of both workshops integrates a total of 30 pieces of art some of which have already been "adopted", helping us fuel and deliver our educational and community development programs. |

El segundo Sábado de Octubre de 2017 celebramos el "Dia Internacional de las Aves Migratorias" en un evento de un día con las participación de más de 400 personas de la región en el cual además de realizar una exhibición de las piezas de la colección de "Concienciarte" realizamos un concurso de dibujo con el tema de la conservación de pericos y guacamayas. Invitamos a otras organizaciones y empresas dedicadas a la conservación y el ecoturismo a participar. Tuvimos 75 personas saliendo a observar aves en una mañana con 6 guías invitados. Hubo cine, comida, música, poesía y mucha diversión!

On the second Saturday of October 2017 we celebrated the "International Day of Migratory Birds" in a one day event with the participation of more than 400 people from the region in which, in addition to making an exhibition of the pieces of the collection " Awareness "we carried out a drawing contest with the theme of the conservation of parrots and macaws. We invite other organizations and companies dedicated to conservation and ecotourism to participate. We had 75 people going out to observe birds in a morning with 6 invited guides. There was cinema, food, music, poetry and lots of fun!

Para dar continuidad y cumplir un ciclo con los participantes de los talleres de "Concienciarte" iniciamos un nuevo programa (el cual esperamos continuar y expandir): "Conoce las Aves de tu Comunidad" con el apoyo de nuestra compañera Bióloga Mónica Evelyn Ponce quién trabaja de tiempo completo con Conectores del Océano a realizando presentaciones educativas para acerca de animales migratorios marinos incluidas las aves, así que completamos la experiencia educativa con una salida de campo a áreas naturales cercanas a las escuelas y entregando materiales educativos tales como guías de identificación rápida, libros para colorear y posters para prevenir el tráfico ilegal de pericos y guacamayas proporcionados por Defenders of Wildlife,
Realizamos un total de 10 salidas escolares en 5 comunidades alcanzando a más de 250 estudiantes, profesores y padres de familia. Por último, en Mayo y Junio de 2018 realizamos dos exposiciones más de la colección "Concienciarte" una de ellas durante la celebración del Dia Internacional de las Aves así como una última exposición en el Centro Comunitario Entreamigos que fue en donde realizamos este proyecto de arte para impulsar la conservación de las aves desde acciones realizadas por miembros de la comunidad local e internacional. |
To follow up and meet the cycle with the participants of the workshops of "Concienciarte" program we implemented a new program (which we hope to continue and extend) "Meet the Birds of your Community" with the field support of Biologist Mónica Evelyn Ponce who is a full time employee at Ocean Connectors and Works delivering environmental education presentations about of migratory marine animals including birds with 6th graders so we completed their educational experience doing a field trip to natural áreas near the schools and delivering educational contents such as coloring books, quick id guides and posters to protect macaws and parrots from pet trade provided by Defenders of Wildlife.
A total of 10 school trips in 5 communities reaching more than 250 students, teachers and parents. Finally, in May and June of 2018 we held two more exhibitions of the "Concienciarte" collection, one of them during the celebration of the International Bird Day as well as one last exhibition in the Entreamigos Community Center, where we carried out this art project to promote the conservation of birds from actions carried out by members of the local and international community. |
